Volunteering in Tanzania...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

Robyn and I have now been home for almost 3 weeks and we have settled in nicely. Robyn is back at work at the Migrant Information Centre and I am in job search mode. We thought we would update you all on our last month in Africa. After we climbed Kili we headed to the sleepy town of Bagamoyo, Tanzania. This is where we spent time volunteering at the Uhuru Youth Centre for African Arts.

Africa...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

Robyn and I have been away for 2 weeks now and so far have been having a ball. The tour doesn’t allow for many Internet opportunities and when we do get on, it’s about as fast as you would expect it to be in Africa.

Out of the freezer and into the fryer...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

Robyn and I have ended our Canadian tour in the Kombi van a few weeks early and are now heading to Central America before our trip to New York. We had intended to stay in the Rockies and spend more time backcountry hiking (we had clocked over 350km at last count) but after some unseasonal hot weather in September, there was some ridiculously unseasonal cold weather at the start of October. The averages over the last few years have been a high of 10 with and low of -2. When we left it was a high of -13 and it was getting down to -20 over night. There had also been over half a metre of snow when normally you can expect a few centimetres. With those conditions aside, we tried to persevere and went on another hike, but walking through snow all day eventually lets the water through the Gore-Tex and made our feet wet. Normally that’s not a problem, but as it was so cold we would wake up to frozen shoes that don’t make for a fun morning of walking. Don’t get us wrong, we thoroughly enjoyed our 6 weeks in the van, but you can’t blame us for wanting to escape to the warmth. Current temperatures in Cancun, Mexico are a balmy 38. Ahhhhhhh.

Two weeks down, two months to go...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

Robyn and I are back in Vancouver after a brilliant 2 weeks on Vancouver Island. We spent the first week hiking the West Coast Trail which is a 75 km long hiking trail following the southwestern edge of the Island. The hike itself covered different terrains from beaches, rock scrambling and rainforest trails that had more mud than Rotorua. Along the way there were 108 bridges, 38 Ladders and 5 cable cars. The weather wasn’t the greatest as it rained basically every day but that didn’t detract from the amazing experience. As we were often walking along the beach we had to keep an eye on the tide to the extent where we had a tide chart to make sure we got to impassable sections at the right time. After completing the trail it’s easy to see why it is consistently rated as one of the best hikes in the world.

Into The Wild...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

After 6 months of being in Canada, we have packed up our things and are about to embark on a road trip around Western Canada and Alaska. We have secured ourselves the use of a serviceable VW Kombi van and plan on seeing how far we can get in the next 2 and a half months. After that we will fly home in November for around 6 weeks before heading to Africa for another three months before finally settling back in at home.

In other news, Just over a week ago Robyn was lucky enough be taken with her work to spend 5 days hiking in the Flathead Valley. The Flathead Valley, in the southeast corner of British Columbia’s Rocky Mountains, is one of earth’s most biologically important places. It is the only large unsettled low elevation valley in southern Canada. It was an amazing experience, the highlights being the thousands of wild flowers, the bush bashing as there were no trails most of the time, swimming in a few glacial lakes, being 130km from the closest town and therefore getting to watch lots of space action and shooting stars, walking into the thick forest in the dark all alone to visit the ‘camp trench’, stuffing my face with various edible plants and wild berries and the amazing panoramic views. It’s hard to explain, so hopefully the photos will give you a taste of why this place was so special.

Kayaking in Deep Cove and Hiking in Garibaldi...

Hi everyone,

We are now approaching the end of our 4th month here in Canada and thought we would give an update. The job market is extremely tough over here. Robyn has been working at an outdoor store called Mountain Equipment Co-op for around a month now which she has really been enjoying while continuing to look for work in her field. I have continued my job search in IT and have had very little luck. I currently have a glimmer of hope and am awaiting confirmation on the next step for a job with the Winter Olympics, but failing that we will more than likely head off soon on a road trip around Canada and then do some more travelling on the way back home to Australia.

Long Weekend...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hello to everybody,

Last weekend was a long one, so Robyn and I along with Steve and Lea headed east to the small town of Penticton. Penticton is in the heart of the Okanagan Valley which is a region located in British Columbia defined by the basin of Okanagan Lake and the Canadian portion of the Okanagan River. We camped just out of town and had a nice relaxing time over the three days.

Oh Canada...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone.

We thought it was time for another Blog update to let you all know what we have been doing. We have now been in Vancouver for a little under 2 months and are thoroughly enjoying it. We have mixed our time here with sightseeing, a skiing trip to the US, hiking, catching up with people from back home, house hunting and job hunting. Most of which have been heaps of fun, with the exception of job hunting. We have set ourselves up in a great apartment in the swanky suburb of Kitsilano which is a 10 minute bus trip into downtown Vancouver. We are sharing the place with 3 others including Steve and Lea from home and another guy (Warren) from Canada. There is even a spare room/study if anyone cares for a visit. :) We are both in the progress of finding work, but its been quite difficult in the current economic climate. Hopefully our search will end soon. The photos will do a much better job of explaining what else we have been up to so I hope you enjoy them.

Relaxing in the south...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

We have seen quite a lot since the last post. Our time since then started in a charming little town called Mamallpuram in the state of Tamil Nadu. Mamallapuram is famous for amazing rock carvings and the Shore Temple which is literally right by the beach (no floating feces here). We spent a few night here eating the fresh seafood, checking out the sights and just relaxing. We were lucky enough to be in town for the festival of Pongal which celebrates the end of the harvest season and is the most important among the farming communities. The tourist office had a free organised trip into one of the villages where we saw the dancing, decorations and preparations of the traditional food. They also had games organised which Robyn promptly won prizes in both (musical chairs and ceramic pot breaking - like pinatas). The prizes while thoughtful, were not practical so our yoga instructor now has a 30 cm wide reproduction of Brihadishwara Temple, which he loved.

Hills, jungles, beaches, temples and chai...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

We have now been back in India for 2 weeks now and have explored quite a fair amount in that time. When we last posted we were in the hill station of Darjeeling. As some you may know, it is famous for its tea plantations. At an elevation of 2200 metres they are some of the highest in India and the world. We sampled some of the different varieties but none of them were as pleasing to the pallet than the 10 cent chai (sweet milk tea). We visited a plantation where we found the self proclaimed “World famous 5 second tea lady”. She did literally make a decent cup of tea in 5 seconds though (if you discount the time it takes her to get the water boiling). Apart from the tea, Darjeeling was just a really cool town to chill out in. We took the “Toy Train” which was a small steam train that struggles up and down the hills. We also found one of the best snack shops in India where we would often sit and have 5 samosas and 2-3 cups of chai. I think that is where our chai addiction was cemented. We now have 1-2 a day at least and sometimes more.

21 days of stunning views...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi everyone,

We have just returned from on high after spending the last three weeks trekking through the Khumbu region with multiple views of Mt Everest. We climbed to over 5000m on multiple occasions and got to a maximum of 5545m at Kala Pattar which looks out over Everest Base Camp and has one of the best views of Everest itself. None of our trekking party of 4 had any effects from the altitude which was great, but some of the food caused issues to a number of us.

After we left Pokhara, we headed off in the direction of Kathmandu. On the way we stopped at a great little gem of a town called Bandipur, which used to be part of the trade route between India and Nepal. Bandipur is famous for it’s cobble stoned streets and old wooden buildings, but we found the friendliness of the people most memorable. Besides being such a great little town, it seems to be less untouched by tourism than the main cities.

After a few relaxing days in Bandipur, we set off for Kathmandu. Not as bad as some people had warned, Kathmandu offered a different experience of Nepal than what we had had so far. Some of the attractions that we visited were Durbar Square - the heart of Kathmandu, the Boudnath Stupa - the largest in Nepal, the Monkey temple - a temple which we walked to which is exactly as advertised and Baktapur - a traffic-free look into what Kathmandu used to be like. Getting to Kathmandu also allowed us to sample some amazing food at great prices.

Hi everyone,

Since the last post we have been quite a few more places. As mentioned at the end of the last post, we did a two day camel safari through the desert of Jailsamer which was fantastic. We got to sleep out under the stars which you can see from the photos we posted. It was pretty darn hot though which meant we had to spend the majority of the middle of the day under a tree relaxing and drinking chai, such a hard task. :)

Home at last...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Well it’s been almost 18 months away but we have now been home for a little under a week. We certainly enjoyed the whole trip but its also been good to be home. Over the last month, since our last post, we saw plenty more sights and had one hell of a good time.

In Phnom Penh we saw plenty of sights which were interesting but also disturbing at the same time as most were related to the Kyhmer Rouge’s reign of terror. We visited the Killing Fields as well as Tuol Sleng museum which was basically the school turned prision used to torture and kill thousands of Cambodians. Some rooms are simply a battered bed and a photo of the dead inhabitant that was in it when the prison was liberated. Having travelled through a lot of Europe that was touched by the holocaust I thought we would be able to cope with these kinds of images, but in many ways they were worse.

The end of Europe...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Well as promised here is the final post while we are here in Europe (yes England is actually part of Europe).

So where was I? We had just left Vienna for Prague. Prague was an amazing city that could have kept us there for longer, but as we were running out of time we had to settle for 2 days. We spent those mainly exploring the old town which is full of towers, churches, museums, bridges and babushka shops (Russian dolls). The main attraction is Prague Castle which overlooks the entire city. One of the best things we did was spend a night in a little bar where there was a duo of guitarists singing classic Czech rock songs (as best as we could tell) as wells as a few English hits from The Eagles, The Beatles and Eric Clapton.

Our latest exploits...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi there, we have once again been on the move a lot since I last wrote.

After Turkey we headed to Greece by ferry which once again reminded me that I don’t like boats! We started our time in Rhodes, which is the eastern most point of Greece. It was a nice little island with plenty of winding alleys, beaches and best of all, Gyros. Our next stop was meant to be Santorini, but as we were on the cusp of peak, the ferries were infrequent. We had to make our way there via Athens. If you know the Greek islands or look at a map, you will no doubt have a chuckle.

Greetings from Turkey...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi there all of you.I thought I would take this opportunity to fill you in on Turkey. We had only planed to visit Istanbul but were tempted by all the travel agency’s pictures to extend our time here. Istanbul was a fantastic city. It was similar to Cairo but with both a European and an Asian feel to it. Of the highlights, the Blue Mosque was high on the list along with the Grand Bazaar and Aya Sofya (originally a church, then a mosque and now a museum). It was fun simply walking the streets and taking in the atmosphere. We then headed east to Cappadocia, an area of central Turkey that is known for it’s unique landscape. Basically its looks like another planet. The whole landscape is made up of hardened volcanic ash that has been washed away by thousands of years of erosion leaving behind colourful cliffs and amazing mounds known as fairy chimneys. Some have been carved by ancient people to make houses, churches, underground cities (some 9 levels deep) and other places of use and were simply awesome. We were able to climb around inside and explore. We met a Canadian who shared our enthusiasm for climbıng and together we lifted each other through the roof ınto a 2 metre hole to clımb even further. It was awesome! After that we headed to Olympus to stay in tree houses by the beach and explore ancient ruins. There was also a natural flame that burns eternally which we visited at night. From Olympus we headed to another natural attraction (Turkey has plenty), Pamukale which is a natural spring that has a high calcium content which has left behind some cliffs and pools that are stunningly white. Tomorrow morning we head to Greece (It really is a hard life being a traveler) which should be fun. Till next time, Glen and Robyn

Europe continues...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Sorry for the lack of updates. With the speed we are moving in we are pressed for time usually. Had there been Internet access at the Macedonian/Serbian border, I could have written a thesis in the 5 hours we waited for a return bus after not being allowed to get a visa on arrival as we were told we could.

Anyway, we have seen a lot since Madrid. We went to Barcelona next which was an amazing city. It was not quite as hot as we had always imagined Spain would be, but the Gaudi building, the main street (Los Rambla) and the rest of the city was well worth seeing. It was easy to see how it became an Olympic city.

Europe so far (in words)…

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Well we have now been traveling (after the last post) for 6 days now. We are currently in Madrid and will be heading off to Barcelona in a couple days time. We have seen some pretty amazing sites and cities already and are only just starting to get into the full swing of things. Portugal was a really beautiful country and you can see the difference already now that we are in Spain. We arrived in Lisbon and straight away we got a good vibe from the friendly people. Lisbon, although a big city, has enough charm to make you like the place. There is a castle that overlooks the whole city and offered some great views. We also spent a nice relaxing day in the hill top city of Sintra which felt like worlds away, even though it was only 45 minutes. Once again, there was a castle on a hill (the ABC’s of Europe, another bloody church, cathedral and of course, castle) but this one was more medieval and plain. We were able to walk almost the entire way around the walls and climb the various towers. After Portugal, we bussed off to Seville. Seville was the highlight so far. The centre was small enough to be able to explore easy enough and our newly renewed student cards (Thank you Egypt) gave either free entrance, or heavily discounted to all the sites. There was a Muslim palace and a really great cathedral which is one of the biggest in the world. After Seville we did a whirlwind trip to Granada to see the Alhambra, which was once again a Muslim palace which was built in a huge compound and had many great buildings and stunning gardens. Madrid has so far been a place big and we have nothing to write about, unless you want to know about doing some washing :-) That’s all for now, we will write again soon and hopefully get some photos up at some point. Cheers, Glen and Robyn

Walking like an Egyptian…

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Well we have started our journey home. We have just spent the last three weeks since finishing working and moving out in two amazing places. First up, we spent 2 weeks in Egypt with Davo and Michelle. We did a whirlwind tour that covered the main sights and then Robyn and I relaxed in Dahab by the red sea.

The tour started of with a bang by taking us to the Pyramids of Giza in Cairo. They were everything we had always imagined them to be, but surprising at the same time. We always envisioned that they would be in the desert as all the pictures had made it look like, instead they were a mere metres from the edge of the city, which took a little of the allure but it didn’t matter.

Ireland Photos...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi there,

We have just returned from a 4-day road trip around Ireland, which was beautiful. In a nutshell, we drove about 1000km which included many kilometers of amazing coastlines with sandy beaches (one if which we could drive on), a sunny winters day hiking in a picturesque national park, kissing the Blarney stone giving us the gift of eloquence, and of course sampled the local Guinness. It was a great change of pace to what we are used to, because having a car gave us the freedom take any route we wanted. Ireland is similar in many ways to the UK but different enough to make it very enjoyable. Below are some of the highlights of the trip.

5 countries 9 days...

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi all,

Well as the name suggests, we have just returned from a whirlwind trip that took us through Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy and Switzerland. In fairness, we only drove through the top of Italy and if we blinked we would have missed Liechtenstein but we did manage to get a glimpse of the Dolomites and get a stamp in our passports from the worlds 4th smallest country. All this was done by car and our total km’s was somewhere in the vicinity of 2300 (Thanks Al for all the driving). The four of us did this in just nine days but it took us to some amazing sites in the process. Along for the trip were me and Robs, Allison (Robyn’s Sister) and Nick (her fiancée).

Beer, chocolate, waffles, beer and of course more chocolate! We have just spent a weekend in Belgium, where we spent our time stuffing our faces, walking the streets and really enjoying ourselves. Of the highlights, Bruges was at the top of the list. Its was a beautiful town that once had the second largest port second only to London. We were also amazed at the huge range of beers. One place claimed to offer over 2000 varieties. Overall, Belgium was pretty cool and fun, even after another long bus trip to and from. I will let the photos show you what else Brussels and Bruges had to offer, enjoy.

Last weekend we spent in Edinburgh visiting Drew and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Edinburgh is a very amazing city and the festival vibe really made it into a great weekend. We managed to check out a couple of shows, street performances, improv sessions as well as sight see. Drew also showed us some of the local bars which surprisingly enough were not all that dissimilar to others. We also managed to sample some haggis and Cullen skink, which are two of the traditional Scottish dishes. One of the shows we saw was a show called “Tossers” which unlike the name suggests was a show about juggling. It was really cool.

Last weekend, we spent a day exploring the beach city of Brighton. Given the string of particularly hot weekends, we thought we would try our luck and enjoy the heat. We were able to enjoy the day, although the weather wasn’t as nice as we hoped. One of the highlights of the day, and also our time here so far in England, was the Royal Pavilion. This was built as a seaside get away for King George V (I think) and was decorated in an Asian style. We also enjoyed the tacky, yet entertaining, Brighton Pier. All in all it was a fun day, and here are some photo’s for you to enjoy.

Written by Glen and Robyn on

Hi there,

Now that we have plenty of time and Internet access here in London you would think that would translate into more posts. Well there is a combination of things that has proved that theory wrong. Firstly, more time means more opportunities to be lazy which is very easy to do. Secondly, Settling down aint exactly as exciting as being in a new country every week. And lastly, it’s hard not to grow to like football when it’s rammed down your throat during the world cup which has taken a lot of our time (mine in particular).

We have just returned from our 8 day cruise in the Galapagos and it was one of the highlights of our trip. It was such an amazing place for so many reasons, the animals were in abundance and the landscapes very unique.

Firstly, the boat, although small, was fairly new and nice enough. Our room however, was not… It was so small and very stuffy as it was below the main deck and only had 2 small port holes for windows. We can’t really complain as it did get us from place to place each day.

Hey Guys,

Back again, some photos for you to enjoy. We appologise for the lack names of the ruins, our memories are not the best.We hope you enjoy them. Before we get to the photos, we thought we would let you know that we visited the middle of the earth today, littereally. We went to the equator (what we thought was the equator at first) which was pretty cool. After that we went to a museum and found out that they were sitting on the real equator. It took the Military to correct the miscalulation of the french using GPS. They got it wrong by 200 metres. At the museum they showed us proof. We got to see water run out of a drain clockwise, counter clockwise and straight out with no swirl. It was really cool. We also scored ourselves certificates for being able to balance an egg on a nail head, apparently gravity was on our side being a little weaker there. We also weighed about a kilo less as well (thats what I call an easy diet). Anyway, on that will do, now on with the show.

Inca ruins, Ica Trail and Inca Kola...

Well, its been a while since our last post and this will our last post from South America. A lot has happened since you read about the salt flats and the jungle.

We have left Bolivia, via lake Titticaca which was pretty nice but not what we were expecting. The Bolivian side had a nice town which allowed easy acces to the main attraction, Isla Del Sol, or the Island of the Sun. This was the supposed birth place of the Inca. There was a nice walk from one end to the other and we got to see our first Inca ruins (of which there was plenty around Cusco).
