On Saturday morning, we wrapped up our packing, bid a heartfelt farewell to Renjo, and readied ourselves for our journey westward. It was wonderful to have friends and family drop by throughout the morning to say their goodbyes, with some even staying to wave us off as we set out.
Our plans for the first two weeks are quite flexible; all we know is that we need to reach Esperance in time for our first booking at Lucky Bay. We had a rough route in mind, but after consulting Wikicamps for the best free campsite, we decided on Taylors Lake Campground, about four hours from home. Since our stay was just for one night, setting up was a breeze, especially as we didn’t even need to unhitch the van. We enjoyed a lovely dinner amidst the serene surroundings.
The following morning, we awoke to a breathtaking sunrise and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before hitting the road again. Our first destination was Pink Lake, which was completely dried up but still retained its pinkish colour, and the kids enjoyed digging in it. Heading towards the border, we quickly devoured the last of our fresh produce (we made sure we didn’t pack much) before crossing into South Australia.
We’ve smoothly settled into the rhythm of our road trip, taking turns driving, ensuring we take regular breaks to stretch our legs, and keeping everyone entertained along the way. Tonight, we’ll be staying at a free campsite in Hamley Bridge, just beyond the Barossa Valley. Tomorrow, we’ll make our way to the Eyre Peninsula, where we’ll enjoy our first beach stay.
